Violin by Charles Ervin, Modeled after Antonio Stradivari, Cremona, 1716

The decade from 1710 to 1720 marked the peak of Stradivari's Golden Period. A fine example from this period, dated 1716, was donated to the Paris Conservatory of Music by Mme. Provigny at the beginning of the present century. The Provigny Stradivari was exhibited in Cremona, Italy, during the summer and fall of 1987 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of Stradivari. It is illustrated in the catalog of that exhibit

While studying in Italy, Dr. Ervin was privileged to have frequent access to the instruments in that Paris collection. He chose the Provigny Stradivari to study and copy from among five great Stradivaris in the Conservatory Museum because of its surpassing beauty of shape and sound. He made this violin for Yoichi Udagawa, a professional musician and conductor. Its dimensions are: length 356 mm, width upper bouts 167 mm, width lower bouts 207 mm.

Owner's Comments:

It is my great privilege to own a violin and bow made by Charles Ervin. They are my most beloved possessions.

The violin has great beauty and presence. There is a tremendous spectrum of tonal colors that one can create on this instrument. I have played many great violins including two Strads and one Guarnerius del Gesu. Charles Ervin's violin equals them in beauty of tone and quickness of response.

The bow made by Mr. Ervin is equally impressive. I have yet to play on a bow that I like more. It is light, tremendously balanced, and draws a very clear and rich sound out of any violin.

Mr. Ervin's achievements as a violin and bow maker are extraordinary. If the good Lord allows him the time to leave a sizable output of instruments and bows, he will surely go down in history as one of the great makers.
